This park in the Berkeley hills is absolutely gorgeous with rolling hills and fantastic views, and has become a happy tradition for generations of East Bay youngsters. From a carousel ride and an ice cream, to picnicking to swimming and fishing at Lake Anza, or a stroll through the Botanic Garden, Tilden has something for everyone. Their mission statement: "A magical fantasy world for young children to create, imagine, play and learn -- Children's Fairyland is a renowned regional storybook park dedicated to stimulating a child's imagination, creativity and desire to learn through fairytales, fantasy sets, performing arts, animals and related exhibits and programs". Sappy name notwithstanding, this is a place little kids just love. The 10-acre theme park in Oakland was built in 1950 and looks every bit its age, though a massive restoration effort is currently underway.


The name says it all -- a waterslide amusement park. Has several areas for toddlers as well and plenty of seating/lawn chairs.


Kids get to let their creativity loose with all the tools of the trade at the Museum of Children's Art (MOCHA), a cheery, sunlit space in downtown Oakland. Brushes sweep dramatically across paper. Beans and macaroni fall upon cardboard with a noisy rattle. Here, kids can find their inner Kandinsky through summer camps, drop-in studios, classes and birthday parties. There is also a gallery featuring rotating exhibits of local and international children's art.

A state-of-art planetarium, theater, and space center, Chabot Space & Science Center has miles of interactive hands-on exhibits, a full-dome digital planetarium, a huge screen theater with sensurround sound, a Discovery Room for children ages four-to-seven and three powerful telescopes. A high point is the digital planetarium's star shows, that entertainingly takes you on a trip across the heavens.
