Love the picture of DC Host Momma Susannah and the new love of her life Isla Skye? Thanks to the magic of Rashmi Pappu, Susannah was able to capture priceless photos of Isla just 10 days old. Baby Loves Disco is dancing for a cause this month and Rashmi is gearing up to give her self and her talent to a family nominated by YOU! You know someone. You know someone who's experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is raising kids while holding down more than one job, or is volunteering selflessly despite extenuating personal circumstances. You know someone who can't afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. You know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family's spirit, love, and beauty. You know someone. I guarantee it. Rashmi wants to know who they are and to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography — $3000 worth, to be exact (digital negatives of all images from the session and 5×7 prints of all images from the session). For more details and how to nominate a family, follow this link. Hurry -- the winner will be announced Christmas Eve.

true story - in 1998 the Italian government formally recognized Neapolitan pizza as a traditional food and granted it D.O.C (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status, which specifies the legally permitted ingredients and methods of preparation necessary to produce authentic Neapolitan Pizza (who knew?). but you don't need to go to italy to taste the magic - amy's pizza in d.c. abides by the requirements and has the best, freshest Neapolitan pizza in northwest dc. no kidding, it's really the best pizza i've ever had in my life. check 'em out here
my family has logged hours and hours of fun at great falls our two furry four- legged members included! the Potomac River builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and flows through the narrow Mather Gorge. The Patowmack Canal offers a glimpse into the early history of this country. Great Falls Park has many opportunities to explore history and nature, all in a beautiful 800 acre park only fifteen miles from the Nation’s Capital. The park offers free 2-day junior ranger programs for children during the summer, picnic areas, trails, and more. Check it out here…
The Breastfeeding Outreach for Greater Washington is a non-profit organization founded by area lactation consultant and nurse Pat Shelley. they provide lactation education, management of lactation related problems, hands-on assistance and instruction in use of breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies. Donate dry cleaned women's suits to Dress for Success, which helps low-income women in the D.C. area who are seeking employment. You also can donate gently used shoes, blouses, and accessories such as handbags and unused hosiery (but for fashion’s sake, please avoid "flesh-toned" pantyhose--we have yet to meet the person whose flesh actually matches those). Note: This is not a dumping ground for your 1980's has-been wardrobe. So, before donating an item, ask yourself this question: Would YOU hire someone who showed up for an interview in a mint green short-sleeved polyester suit and white pumps? Located blocks from BLD DC's Rock-n-Roll Hotel, drop off your gently used suit before heading over to shake it with the rest of your community. more info here.
the Washington Animal Rescue League - is home to one of the world’s most progressive animal rehabilitation centers and no-kill shelters -- massage therapists for animals, classical music piped through the shelter to relax the animals, steel-bar cages replaced by comfortable and attractive doggie dens, cat condos, and puppy pads; cats walk freely around the cat room. on a regional level, the Shelter Animal Relief Effort (ShARE) brings together the area's animal welfare organizations to help alleviate the effects of the animal overpopulation crisis. It takes a village to care for our animals, not just our kids, and WARL is providing a safe village in our city for the dignity of our local homeless animals awaiting adoption.
The Washington Youth Garden sows the seeds of interest in gardening, horticulture, and environmental issues during the school year with carefully designed lessons and activities that are delivered in the classrooms of several schools in the area. The children who participate in these activities are in grades 3, 4, and 5. When spring arrives, students who have developed a strong interest in the program begin planting their own small garden plot in the Youth Garden at the U.S. National Arboretum. As summer progresses, they experience the drama of nature that is often missing in urban life. They enjoy the wonder of watching seeds sprout, nurturing growth, and proudly harvesting the fruits of their labor. They also experience the challenge of weeds, the attack of pests that is so often met by the counterattacks of beneficial insects, and the cycle of death, decay, and rebirth as they manage their plots
